This summer, leading Belfast based software house Kainos (Greek for “innovation”) are running a training scheme for first year university students targeted at developing applications for Apple’s iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad). Welcome to App Camp.
The Camp is scheduled to run for 8 weeks during the Summer 2011 break at the Kainos Belfast offices near Queen’s University. Any First Year student who is studying any course with a programming component is eligible to apply.
“Campers” will be provided with development tools and test devices (MacBooks and iPod Touches) and given formal training in iOS development by experienced developers. They will then be let loose to develop their app and launch it on the App Store. Mentoring, access to graphic design skills, marketing support and so on will be available throughout.
Afterwards, Campers get to keep the MacBooks and iPods. After three months, the app judged to be performing “best” on the App Store will win “an awesome prize”.
Demand for developers in Northern Ireland exceeds supply at the moment and companies are having a hard time finding candidates at all, never mind those with the required skills. The reasons for this are many and debatable, but App Camp will help build the kind of development expertise Kainos need and begin a relationship with the Campers that may, one day, result in them taking a position with the company.
For the Campers, it’s an amazing opportunity to gain highly valuable experience and skills under the tutelage of seasoned industry professionals – as well as a free MacBook!
In the summer after my first year at university I spent 12 weeks working at BT as a developer. The knowledge I gained then has stood by me ever since, and I’m writing this 19 years later. I can’t underline enough what an opportunity this is for any budding developer, even if you’re not particularly interested in developing for iOS.
If you’re a first year student with designs on working in software engineering one day, you’d be a fool not to apply for App Camp.
Places are limited and there is sure to be hot competition for seats, and there are also a number of conditions that apply. Closing date for applications is 15th April 2011.

Council likes to recognise achievements of people in the Borough and is aware that Glenn Sayers from Ballymena has been awarded a place on the App Camp.
To enable Council to send a letter of congratulations to Glenn, I would appreciate it if you would forward his address to me.
